With the massification of higher education it is easy for students to feel like a number, especially in a large enrolment subject. This session will present a case study of a large class (2100 students annually) and how they have overcome the problem of scale and increased engagement.

Examples include:

1) automated emails and SMS based on learning analytics to connect with students based on their grades, login activity, assessment submission and completion.
2) Improving the quality and student’s satisfaction with feedback, using by recording audio feedback and using feedforward strategies, and
3) Giving just-enough, just-in-time, just-for-me support using a Live Chat widget within the unit’s LMS site.

Jaclyn will present data on increased retention (e.g. 98%), high student satisfaction with the teaching within the subject (e.g. 95-98% satisfied) and high satisfaction with the feedback they receive (e.g. 93-99% satisfied).

Dr Jaclyn Broadbent specializes in large class teaching, annually teaching more than 2100 students at Deakin University. She is a Senior Lecturer in Health Psychology, a Research Fellow at the Centre for Research in Assessment and Digital Learning (CRADLE), and a Leading Educator for the learning management platform Desire2Learn. Jaclyn is passionate about delivering high-quality, challenging and supportive learning experiences for students, and has won several awards, including an Australian Award for University Teaching Excellence, Australian OLT teaching citation for outstanding contribution to student learning, the Vice Chancellors award for Deakin University Teacher of the year and Desire2Learn Teaching Impact Award.
