Marking a Quiz
This guide will take you through the process of manually marking a quiz.
The VU Collaborate Quiz tool is effective at testing and identifying gaps in knowledge and providing feedback to instructors and students. You can create a quiz in VU Collaborate and link it to the grade book to form a component of students' assessments.
This guide shows how to:
- Bulk publish quiz results
- Mark a quiz with manually graded (no auto marking) questions
- Edit a question and update all attempts
Bulk publish quiz results
A. Access quiz attempts
1. From the navigation bar select Assessment then Quizzes.
2. From the quiz name select Grade from the dropdown list.
B. Publish Feedback
- Select (2) all users (checkbox at the top of the table)
Select (3) Publish Feedback to release results to students
C. Export Grades to the grade book
- NOTE: this option is only available if automatic export to grades is NOT selected in the quiz settings
Select (4) Export to Grades to update grades in the grade book
Mark a quiz with manually graded (no auto marking) questions
Many quiz questions including True/False and Multiple Choice are automatically graded.
There are some questions, such as Written Responses or Long Answers, that need to be manually graded, by taking the following steps.
1. From the navigation bar select Assessment then Quizzes.
2. From the quiz name, select Grade from the dropdown menu.
3. In the list of student names, you will see (1) pending evaluation status for submissions that need manual grading.
Click on the (2) attempt number to view the attempt.
4. Scroll down and review the questions. Autograded questions, such as True/False will already be graded.
5. Questions that are Not Autograded will have no grade entered.
Read the (1) quiz question, (2) written response, and then (3) enter a grade.
6. Once you finish marking all questions, click Publish to release grades and feedback to students or Save Draft to save your changes.
Settings
NOTE: if Autograded questions (ie True/False or Multiple Choice) are used with Manually graded questions (ie Written Response/Long Answer), it is best to unselect Automatic Grading when releasing the quiz. This is to prevent students from receiving partially marked quiz grades.
1. From the navigation bar select Assessment then Quizzes.
2. From the quiz name, select Edit from the dropdown menu.
New Interface
3. Expand Evaluation & Feedback.
4. Unselect - Auto-publish attempt results immediately upon completion.
Edit a question and update all attempts
Suppose a question needs to be updated after attempts have been submitted (eg selecting the correct answer option).
To do so you will need to (a) update the question, and then (b) update all existing attempts.
(a) Update the question
1. From the navigation bar select Assessment then Quizzes.
2. From the quiz name, select Edit from the dropdown menu.
3. On the Edit Quiz page, scroll down then select Add/Edit Questions.
Read the Confirm Edit Quiz Questions warning message.
This message warns, that there are existing student attempts and that making modifications will not modify the existing attempts. To modify how any questions are scored you will need to also go and Update All Attempts.
4. Select Continue.
5. Make your required question changes, then select Save to update the question.
(b) Update Existing Attempts
As previously submitted attempts will not be automatically re-graded, we now need to update all attempts.
1. From the navigation bar select Assessment then Quizzes.
2. From the quiz name, select Grade from the dropdown menu.
3. Select the Questions tab, then select the Update all Attempts option
4. Now scroll down to the heading Questions that are not in the quiz anymore, and click on the name of the updated question.
5. In the Update All Attempts window, scroll down to Grading Type, and select either:
- Give to all attempts ( _ ) points, or
- Give attempts with answer ( ___ ) ( _ ) points
For example, if a question-answer is changed from True to False, then the following updates are required
- Select [1] Give to attempts with the answer, select False, then enter 1 point, then
- Select Give to attempts with the answer, select True, then enter 0 points
6. You may also add a comment in the text field if you would like to communicate a reason for the update.
When complete, select Save.
7. Then Yes to confirm changes.
The modification will now appear in the Modifications Log.
8. Click Go Back to Questions.
9. Now review updates, then publish grades, and export results to the grade book.
NOTE: depending on the quiz setting you may need to manually publish grades and send results to the grade book.
- Review
Select the (1) Users tab, and check that the score values have changed - Publish Feedback
Select (2) all users (checkbox at the top of the table)
Select (3) Publish Feedback to release results to students - Export Grades to the grade book
NOTE: this option is only available if automatic export to grades is NOT selected in the quiz settings
Select (4) Export to Grades to update grades in the grade book
