Record a video with Panopto Capture

Panopto Capture lets you record audio, video, your screen or an application directly from your web browser.

Getting Started: Record a Video, by Panopto

 

Step 1: Open Panopto Capture

1. In your VU Collaborate space, select Tools > Video (Panopto) from the main menu.
   
   
2. Panopto will open in a new browser tab. Choose where you want to create and store your video:
   • VU Collaborate space folder: use this folder when the video is intended for students in the space.
   • My Folder: use this folder when you want the video to remain private to you.
      
3. From the top right, select + Create (1), then select Panopto Capture (2).
   
   
4. Panopto Capture opens in a new browser tab. From here, you can select the audio, camera and screen or application you want to record.
   You will now have three tabs: (1) VU Collaborate space, (2) Panopto Library, and (3) Panopto Capture.
   
   
   

 

Step 2: Choose your recording options

Before recording, check the audio, video and screen or application you want to use.

Your available options will depend on the equipment connected to your computer.

 

Select your audio

1. Select the Audio (microphone) option.

2. If prompted by your browser, select Allow to give Panopto access to your microphone.

3. Panopto will display the available microphones and select one automatically.

4. To use a different microphone, hover over the device and select Switch.

5. Check the audio indicator to make sure Panopto is receiving sound from your microphone.

6. When you are happy with your selection, select X to close the audio settings.
   
   

 

Video options

1. Select the Video option.

2. If prompted by your browser, select Allow to give Panopto access to your camera.

3. Panopto will display the available cameras and select one automatically.

4. To use a different camera, hover over the device and select Switch.

5. To add another video source, select +.

6. Check the video preview to make sure your camera is positioned correctly.

7. When you are happy with your selection, select X to close the video settings.
   
   

 

Share your screen or an application

If you are demonstrating software, presenting slides or capturing a website, you can include your screen in the recording.

1. Select the Screens and Apps. 
2. You have three options: (1) Browser Tab, (2) Application Window, and (3) Entire Screen.
3. Select the screen, application or browser tab you want to record.
4. If you are sharing content that includes sound, such as a video, select Share audio if this option is available.
5. Select Share.
   

      

 If you select to share the Chrome tab, you can see which tab is being shared by the blue box, and you won't lose the Panopto tab as it has the red circle on it.

When sharing a browser tab, your browser will indicate which tab is currently being shared. You can stop sharing at any time by selecting Stop sharing.

Recording a PowerPoint presentation

If you want to record a PowerPoint presentation while still being able to move between Panopto and your slides, you can run the slide show in a window.

In PowerPoint:

1. Slide Show tab
2. Select Set Up Slide Show
3. Under Show Type, select Browsed by an individual (window)
4. Select OK.
5. Start your slide show.
6. In Panopto Capture, select Screens and Apps and choose the PowerPoint window.

Step Three: Record your video

1. When you are ready, select the Record button (red circle).

2. A countdown of 5 seconds will appear just before the recording begins. 

3. Navigate to your selected tab, or application and deliver your presentation or demonstration. 

4. When you have finished, return to Panopto Capture and select Stop (red square).

5. Panopto will begin processing and uploading your recording.

6. Give your recording a clear name.

7. Check the folder where the recording will be stored. You can change the folder if required.

8. If appropriate, add a description of the video.

9. Wait until Panopto indicates that it is safe to close the browser tab before closing Panopto Capture.
