Creating Significant Figures Questions

This guide is about creating Significant Figures questions in your quizzes, surveys or in your Question Library. For more information, please see Creating Questions in the Question LibraryCreating a Quiz and Creating a Survey.

Significant figures questions require respondents to answer in scientific notation and provide solutions that contain a specified number of significant figures. Math and science units commonly use this question type. You can ensure each respondent receives a unique question by including set variables that randomly generate scientific notations within the problem. 

Here are the steps to create significant figures questions 


Step One: Creating the Question


1. Click Assessment and select Quizzes.

2. In your selected Quiz or Question Library, click Add/Edit Questions

3. Click New and select Significant Figures (x10).

4. Provide a Title for the question. You can use a short title to help you identify the question; make sure to be consistent and to write something that will help you identify quickly each question from the rest.

5. Enter the Points value that this question is worth. You can also choose a Difficulty level from the dropdown list (this is optional).

6. Enter your significant figures question in the Question Text field. This is what students will see and will be required to answer. Enclose variables with curly braces to generate random numbers.

7. 4. Click Insert an Image if you would like an image to accompany your question. (This is optional)

8. Select the file you would like to upload, then click Add.

9. You can also enter a description of the image in the Description field. (This is optional)

10. Enter the solution's formula in the Formula field and enclose variables in curly braces.

Step Two: Setting Properties


1. Select how many Significant Figures answers must contain.

2. Select a percentage from the Deduct % of points for incorrect significant figures drop-down list to assign a weighted points value to the correct number of significant figures.

Note: The number of significant figures automatically calculated in a solution equals the number of significant figures you set for the question.

3. Select a Tolerance option to accept near-accurate, estimated, and rounded answers.

4. Enter a unit type (mm, cm, grams, inches, etc.) in the Units field to assess if answers include correct units of measurement.

5. Select a percentage from the Worth % of Points drop-down list to assign a weighted points value to the measurement unit.

6. Set (from one of the following) the Evaluation Options for your Units field.

Case Insensitive: Auto-grading searches for a matching character pattern in the answer text with or without letter case correctness.

Case Sensitive: Auto-grading searches for a matching character pattern in the answer text that must have letter case correctness.

Regular Expression: Auto-grading uses meta-characters to search for one or more matching strings in the answer text's character pattern. What you set as meta-character parameters helps determine letter case sensitivity.

Step Three: Variables


1. You can click Add Variable to create additional variables.

2. To reduce the number of variables, click the corresponding Remove Entry icon.

3. Enter each variable Name used in your formula along with their corresponding minimum value in Min, and maximum value in Max.

4. Enter a number in the Step field to set the system's incrementing steps as it generates numbers from the range set by the Min and Max fields.

5. There is an option to Expand Question Hint and Expand Question Feedback.

In Question Hint, you can enter something to assist students with the answer. (This is optional)

6. In the Quesion Feedback field, you can enter feedback for the question as a whole. (This is optional)



Step Four:Preview and Save Your Question


1. Scroll up to the formula field and click Test to see if your formula works.

If something is incorrect, there will be an error message.

2. Once you have resolved this, and you click Test, your question will appear. Check the details and then click Done. You will return to the editing view.

3. The bar at the bottom of the page has options to Save, Save and Copy, Save and New, Preview and Cancel.

Click Save and Copy to save and create another Significant Figures question that retains the copied properties. The original will be saved and you can use the copy as a template for another question.

Click Save and New to continue creating new Significant Figures questions.

Click Cancel to exit without saving any changes.

4. Click Preview to view how your question will appear to students how the question will appear when you are grading.

5. Click Save to return to the question library.

6. Click the dropdown arrow next to your Quesiton title to view options for your question. From here, you can Edit, Preview or view Attempts

7. Once satisfied with your questions, click Done Editing Questions

4. This will return you to the Quiz Editing screen.
