Creating an Analytic Rubric

Analytic rubrics allow you to grade assessments tasks such as a dropbox submission or a discussion post based on a pre-defined set of criteria. Levels of achievement are displayed in columns and the assessment criteria are displayed in rows. Analytic rubrics may use a points, custom points or text only scoring method. Points standardise the values listed in each performance level for all criteria listed in the rubric. Custom point allows you to nominate a value for each performance level in each criterion, giving you complete flexibility. For both points and custom points, an overall score is provided based on the total number of points achieved.

It is best that you have a fully designed rubric for your assessment before creating it within VU Collaborate. For tips on creating rubrics refer to this article on 5 Ways to Create Great Rubrics.

The following are the list of steps and guides you can view to help you with creating an Analytic Rubric:

Step One: Access the Rubrics Tool


Below is an example of an Analytic Rubric created with the recommended Custom Points:

1. Click Rubrics from the Assessments menu to access the rubrics tool to get started.

Step Two: Create a New Rubric


1. Click New Rubric to create a new rubric.

Step Three: Set the Properties for the Rubric


1. The New Rubric page will open the Properties tab. Enter a descriptive Name for your rubric.

2. Click on the drop-down menu under Rubric Status.

3. Select a Rubric status, draft, published or archived. It is recommended that you keep it as a draft until you have completed your rubric.

  • Draft: use if you are not ready to link your rubric with an assessment tool.
  • Published: use if you are ready to start evaluating using your rubric.
  • Archived: hides your rubric from being found in the search results and is not available to link with assessment tools.
  • Note: Once it has been published it can be associated with assessment dropbox folders and other tools.

4. Select Analytic from the rubric type drop-down list.

5. Select the number of achievement levels you want in the Initial # of Levels field. Levels represent the number of performance measures available (e.g. HD, D, C, P, N).

6. Select the number of  criteria you want in the Initial # of Criteria field. (e.g. Discussion, Analysis, Referencing, Writing, Presentation).

Tip: You can add/delete levels and criteria within the edit Levels and Criteria tab before attaching it to an Assessment Dropbox. 

7. Select the type of Scoring Method from the drop-down list. We recommend that you create Analytic rubrics using Custom Points. This allows you to easily change points of each row of criteria. Only use Points if all of your rubric criteria are scored using the same points system.

  • Custom Points: The Custom Points scoring method allows you to customise the points given for each criterion. For example, if performance levels are "Poor", "Good", and "Excellent", then the criterion "Spelling and Grammar" can be worth 0 points, 10 points, and 20 points for each level, and the criterion "Expression" can be worth 0 points, 30 points, and 60 points, making it worth three times the points of "Spelling and Grammar".
  • Points: Includes points to assess performance. For example, three performance levels for a rubric can be "Poor (0 points)", "Good (75 points)", and "Excellent (125 points)". Use this rubric if all your criteria are scored using the same points.
  • Text Only: Performance levels indicated by Text Only. For example, three performance levels for a rubric can be "Poor", "Good", and "Excellent".

8. Click Advanced Availability option link to choose if you want to associate the rubric with Competencies and My ePortfolio.

Note: Make sure to select Competencies to ensure that assessment drop-boxes can be associated with the rubric.

9. Click Save.

Tip: Check the 'Hide scores from student views' option to hide scores from students. However, it is best practice to show to students how they will be marked. If you do not wish scores to be shown, consider using a Text-only rubric.

Step Four: Define Rubric Criteria and Levels


1. Click on the Levels and Criteria tab.

2. An empty rubric shell with criteria, levels, a criteria group and overall score will be created. The example below uses the Custom Points Rubric type.

3. Click on the drop-down menu in the Criteria column.

4. Select Edit Criteria Group.

5. Update the Levels and Criteria names.

6. Click Save.

Tip: Update the score/points value for each level if you selected Points as the rubric scoring type.

8. Once you have renamed your Criteria and Levels, add descriptions for each of the levels. Click the drop-down arrow next to a level column heading then select Edit Level.

9. Enter a Description of what is required to achieve the level for each criterion and a score. 

10. When entering scores ensure that the maximum score prescribed to the highest level (eg. HD) while minimum/mid-range points are prescribed to every other level.

Note: The maximum score must be prescribed to the highest level because the system assigns the weighting of the criteria using the highest level points.

Tip: Level descriptions help evaluators determine which level best reflects a student’s assessment. The more detailed your descriptions are, the more consistent evaluations will be. Additionally, if you are using a range of score, please add this to the level description.

11. You can provide suggested Feedback to students for each performance level in the empty space beside description. Standard feedback appears to students who are awarded the level and becomes an easy method for providing students with specific and transparent feedback.

12. Click Save.

Step Five: Prescribe an Overall Score


Next, you are required to prescribe an overall score, this is found at the bottom of the rubric. The overall score provides students with which level or grade they have achieved in their assessment. Below are some examples of overall scores:


Example 1: A rubric with 3 levels - Exemplary, Satisfactory and Unsatisfactory.

This rubric awards students with a maximum of 50 points.

Example 2: A rubric with 5 levels: Fail, Pass, Credit, Distinction and High Distinction

This rubric uses the VU Grading Scheme. It awards students with a maximum of 100 points.

To add your Overall Score:

1. Click on the drop-down arrow beside Overall Score, then select Edit Levels.

2. Fill in your Level names. These should be the same as the level names you have used at the top of the rubric. 

3. Fill in the Start Range for your level. This should be the minimum score for the level.

4. Fill in the description for achieving the level.
5. Click on Save to save your overall score.
6. Check that your Rubric has the correct points and information as you will not be able to make changes to the rubric once it is linked to an assessment dropbox/ gradebook item. 
7. Click on Close. 

Tip:  If you need to make changes to a rubric after being linked, make a clone of the rubric and link it again to the desired assessment dropbox/gradebook item.

Step Six: Publish the Rubric


1. Once you are certain that you have finished editing the rubric, click on the drop-down arrow beside it then hover over Set Status and select Published.

Step Seven: Link your Rubric to the Assessment Dropbox


Now that you have created your rubric, you can use it by attaching it to an assignment in the Assessment Dropbox/Gradebook item.

1. Click Assessments on the navbar, then select Assessment Dropbox.

2. Click on the drop-down arrow beside the desired Assessment Dropbox and select Edit Folder

3. Scroll down to find Rubrics, then click on Add Rubric.

4. Click on the checkbox beside your desired rubric then click on Add Selected.

Tip: If you do not see your Rubric, your Rubric status may still be set to Draft.

5. Click Save and Close. Your Rubric is now linked to your Assessment Dropbox. 

Step Eight: Allocate Accurate Scores/Points to an Analytic Rubric


 Below is a Points Allocation/Range Guide for a Rubric marked out of 100:

Note: The HD column must include the highest value attainable (however, can be edited/marked down when marking). This done to make the rubric work correctly in VU Collaborate, due to technical specifications. All other levels are set at the % starting point or a mid-point. Rounding to the nearest 0.5 rather than 0.9 is also a workable method. Please email This email address is being protected from spambots. Note: You will not be able to change the name, description, levels and criteria after you have started marking using the rubric. If you want another rubric of the same, make a copy by clicking on the dropdown arrow next to the rubric title and selecting copy.
